View of snowy peaks and villages in the valley. Active in the fresh air. Relax in a cozy mountain hut or in the sun on the terrace. Wonderful, isn't it, winter sports? Skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing or a beautiful winter hike. Austria is 'the place to be' during the winter months.

Austria offers in winter a beautiful nature, lots of fun and delicious traditional dishes. And all that close to the Netherlands. Almost every ski area in Austria is easily accessible by car, public transport and plane. A winter sport in Austria guarantees the best ski areas in Europe.
In Austria a distinction is made between blue, red and black runs.
Please note that blue slopes are not always easy. The slope percentage is in fact an average. Sometimes the slope is steeper on short stretches. The weather conditions also determine the difficulty of the slopes. A piste is extra challenging after heavy snowfall, in the presence of ice or when it is very busy.

In Austria you will find many popular winning sports areas. In this article we have listed the top 10 ski areas in Austria for you. As a beginner there is plenty to do on the blue pistes in, for example, Brixental and Zell am See. Zillertal Arena and Ellmau are very suitable for children. Sölden and Ischgl are ideal for advanced winter sports enthusiasts. These areas are large and you have a wide choice of red and black pistes. Gerlos and Kirchberg are again known for their exuberant après-ski.
Besides these ski areas top 10, there are of course many more beautiful winter sports areas to be found in Austria, such as Matrei-Kals and St. Johann in Tirol.
The area SkiWelt in Wilder Kaiser-Brixental belongs to one of the best après-ski areas in Austria. Especially Westendorf is known for its splashing après-ski. Festivities can be had in for example Gerri's Inn and the Moskitobar.
Wilder Kaiser-Brixental is ideal for beginners and children. The area has many blue slopes with long descents. There are also several short practice slopes in the villages. The ski pass is free for young children (under the age of 5/6 years). In the ski area you will find the very child friendly village Ellmau. There are several practice slopes here and the gondola takes you to several blue slopes. Of course there is also a children's land. As a parent you can reach the rest of the SkiWelt ski area with all kinds of lift connections.
If you are an advanced skier/snowboarder, there are several red slopes and some black slopes. For really challenging pistes and off-piste possibilities you better choose another ski area. The area is not so high and is therefore not very snow sure. On the higher stretches, however, it is almost always possible to ski. The ski area is easy to reach by car. Note that the weekends and holidays can be busy.

Gerlos is the capital of the Alps when it comes to après-ski. Königsleiten and Zell am Ziller are also among the best après-ski ski areas in Austria. Conviviality all around in the Zillertal Arena!
Zillertal Arena is excellent for advanced users. You will find several challenging pistes in the ski area. For example, the black connecting slope between Gerlos and Königsleiten is very popular with experienced winter sportsmen. The area is very child friendly. There are several practice slopes in the villages. Plenty of space to learn to ski in peace and quiet for the little ones. Beginners can go on the blue slopes. The area is fairly spicy and therefore not ideal if you are just starting with winter sports.
The snow security depends strongly on where you are in the Zillertal Arena. Zell am Ziller, for example, lies very low and there is not always a lot of snow here. Snow cannons are often used. Gerlos and Königsleiten are very high and snow is guaranteed. The ski area is very popular and can therefore be quite busy during the holidays and weekends. From 2 days you automatically get a ski pass for the entire Zillertal. For example, you can also spend a day in the Zillertal 3000 ski area at Mayrhofen skiën.

The Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis ski area is known for its cozy après-ski, the wide variety of slopes for both beginners and advanced skiers and the child friendliness. You will find various children's hotels, children's countries and ski schools aimed at children. Children under the age of 5/6 do not pay for a ski pass. Advanced skiers can go on the various red and black pistes.

Large parts of the ski area are quite high, which means that the snow security is high. Reason that a holiday to Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis is quite expensive. The ski pass is more expensive than in many other winter sports areas in Austria. This also applies to the food and accommodation. Tip: save costs by spending the night in one of the smaller villages, such as Prutz Fliess or Ried. Fliess is about 30km from the ski area. Perfect to save costs but keep in mind that you have to travel for a long time. Fliess is officially outside the Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis ski area.

Sölden and Hochsölden are villages in the skiing region Ötztal Arena. An excellent ski area for advanced skiers. There is a wide choice of slopes. You can also make long day trips and challenging off-piste routes follow. You will find long runs in the area. The longest descent is over 14 km. Sölden is less suitable for beginners and children. There are a number of beautiful blue slopes to find. In the main season it is often very busy on the slopes.
Sölden is a well-known and popular ski area. The highest point is over 3200 meters. Partly thanks to a number of glaciers, this is a very snow-sure ski area. Because of the high altitude you can almost always ski. Also in early December and in April, the snow is guaranteed. Because of the altitude you also have beautiful views over the whole area.
Sölden/Hochsölden belongs to one of the more expensive winter sports areas in Austria in terms of ski pass, food and accommodation. Here you get a beautiful and large ski area in return. With a high snow security. Just like traditional mountain huts and lots of opportunities for fun après-ski. What makes this area so popular is the beautiful location. The slopes are almost all day in the sun. You have nowhere in the shade of surrounding mountains (apart from the descent).

Mayrhofen is located in the Zillertal 3000 ski area. Mayrhofen is one of the most popular winter sports destinations in Austria. There is a wide choice of pistes for children, beginners and advanced skiers. Take a day trip along various mountain peaks or choose a charming ski route. Are you a real daredevil? Then the soot-black Harakiri is just right for you.

Other advantages of the area are the great snow security due to the high altitude. On the Hintertux Glacier you can even ski all year round. In addition, there is plenty of après-ski in all villages. The ski area has not so many practice slopes, but there are several children's countries for the little ones. The ski pass is free for children under 5/6 years. Virtually all buses and trains between the Zillertal ski resorts are free on presentation of the Zillertal Superskipass.
Mayrhofen is very popular. The village is low and you always have to take the elevator up at the beginning and end of the day. There is no descent. Please note that it can be busy at the lifts during the holiday periods. Do you just stay on the mountain and enjoy the sunshine? With a nice drink of course!
From 2 days you automatically get a ski pass for the entire Zillertal. You can then, for example, also spend a day skiing in the Zillertal Arena ski area.

Ischgl is the largest village of the Silvretta Arena Ischgl-Samnaun ski area. The ski area is ideal for advanced skiers and snowboarders. It is one of the largest winter sports areas in Austria with no less than 239 kilometres of pistes. Beautiful ski routes, beautiful valley slopes and a large number of challenging red slopes and steep black slopes. Off-piste is also possible in Ischgl. Beginners and children are well catered for in Ischgl. There are several ski schools and blue pistes.
Are you ready for a fresh beer or mulled wine after skiing? Then you will find cozy après-ski tents in Ischgl. You can party during the day on the mountain and in the village until late at night. Samnaun is very suitable if you want more peace and quiet. The Silvretta Arena is very snow sure. Most of the slopes are above 2000 meters. The area is relatively expensive when it comes to accommodation, ski pass and food. You get a beautiful ski area in return. Just like snow security, cozy accommodations and delicious food.

Are you an advanced skier or snowboarder? If so, you'll be able to get your feet up on the ski slopes in Lech. Steep black pistes, challenging off-piste routes, long day trips, beautiful ski routes. It is all possible in the Ski Arlberg ski area. The ski area is mainly intended for advanced skiers. Children and beginners are welcome in the village of Lech. Here you will find several blue slopes. Wide, relatively quiet and nicely sloping. The other villages are not very suitable for children and beginners.
Want a drink after skiing? That is possible in one of the many après-ski bars. The Mooserwirt in Lech is one of the most famous après-ski tents in Austria. The Arlberg is one of the most snow-assured winter sports areas in Austria. The villages are also quite high and are regularly equipped with a white blanket. Arlberg is a beautiful and snow-sure ski area with many possibilities.
The ski pass, accommodations and food are therefore quite expensive. Especially in Sankt Anton, Lech and Zürs prices are higher than in most other winter sports areas in Austria. Warth and Schröcken are slightly cheaper. Wald am Almberg is about 23km away from the ski area but can be a suitable option for cheaper accommodation.

The Kitzbühel-Kirchberg ski area is perfect for beginners. Lots of blue slopes and various possibilities for tours. The blue slopes are also very beautiful for children. There are several children's areas, both in the valley and on the mountain. You will not find very high mountains and steep descents in Kitzbühel-Kirchberg. However, for advanced skiers there is plenty to do on the black and red slopes.
Besides Gerlos, Kirchberg is also one of the most popular après-ski villages in Austria. Hossen, singing along, lots of drinks, Dutch artists and ending with a special frikandel. That's après-ski in Kirchberg! And if you want après-ski in style, you have to be in Kitzbühel. The ski area is relatively low and therefore not very snow sure. The snow cannons ensure that a large part of the slopes are white during the winter sports season.

Saalbach Hinterglemm has a varied ski area. There are various possibilities for beginners. Wide blue slopes and with a little experience you can quickly make beautiful trips. For the little ones there are various children's slopes and practice slopes. And for advanced skiers there is also plenty to do. Different red and black pistes, off-piste routes and the possibility to make long trips. You can on both sides of the mountains down.
The villages in this ski area are cozy and you will find the necessary après-ski. Especially Saalbach and Hinterglemm are known for their cosy après-ski. Are you fond of your peace and quiet? Then find accommodation in Leogang or Fieberbrunn. The highest point lies at almost 2100 meters. So it is not a very snow-sure area. The area is very popular and it can be quite busy. Especially in holiday periods.

Zell am See is ideal for beginners. There are many blue slopes and you can descend to the valley from different sides. The area is quite small and clear. Also for children this ski area is perfect. For advanced skiers there are a number of red and black slopes. The valley descent at Schmittenhöhe, for example, is a beautiful and challenging piste.
The snow security is not very high, because the ski area is quite low. In the winter months, however, there is almost always enough snow. Snow cannons lend a hand. A winter sport is of course not complete without après-ski. Also in Zell am See is plenty to do in various après-ski venues.

Zell am See is relatively expensive, but the surrounding villages are a lot cheaper. The ski pass also gives access to the Maiskogel and Kitzsteinhorn in Kaprun. The Kitzsteinhorn is a glacier at an altitude of 3000 metres and snow-covered all year round. Whatever the weather, you can always ski or snowboard on the glacier.

In many Austrian ski areas, in addition to the standard ski pass, you also have the opportunity to buy a different type of ski pass. For example the SuperSkipas which gives access to 23 ski areas in Austria. A good choice if you are going on winter sports for more than a week. Be aware that you have to take the ski bus or car to another ski area. And some ski areas are a long way from each other.
There is also the Tiroler Oberland ski pass and the Paznauntal ski pass. In the ski areas in the Zillertal you automatically get a Zillertal ski pass from 2 days. You can use this pass in all winter sports areas in the Zillertal.
Please note: Each holiday provider has different options. With some providers the ski pass is included in the price. Always ask the respective provider for the options.

Winter sports in Austria is known for its cozy and authentic mountain huts. You will also find modern restaurants along the slopes. You can really eat anything in Austria. Well stocked goulash soup, pizza, Kaiser marren, a large piece of meat with chips and much more. Prices vary per area and per restaurant. On average the prices for a lunch on the mountain are between 4 and 25 euros. But for most winter sports bratwursten and schnitzels with chips are the favorite winter sports snack!

Are you a novice winter sportsman? Or would you like to learn better skiing or snowboarding? In Austria you will find several ski schools. The ski schools offer group lessons and private lessons for children and adults. Prices vary per ski school and per ski area.
Calculate for a group lesson at an amount between 150 and 250 euro for 5 days of lessons. Time is usually 4 hours per day. The lesson price for children is often a bit cheaper. Private lessons are a lot more expensive, but usually more effective.
Are you going on winter sports in Austria? Then there are some things you need:

Skis, poles, ski boots, a snowboard and snowboard boots can be rented almost anywhere. Especially if you're just starting out, it's wise to go up the mountain with rented equipment first. This way you can see if winter sports is something for you.

The rental price varies per ski area and per landlord. Advanced and adult ski equipment is more expensive than equipment for beginners and children. Count on an approximate amount of 50 to 150 euros for a week. Also clothing is of course for sale in the many Austrian shops. However, you pay the main price.
Each ski area in Austria is relatively close to the Netherlands. Certainly in comparison with the ski resorts in for example France, Croatia and Scandinavia. The average distance is about 900 kilometers. This distance is easily covered by car. Winter tires are mandatory. Do not forget to bring snow chains. A vignette for the highway is also mandatory. You can buy a vignette at many points on the road to Austria. You can also buy a vignette online.
You'd rather go by plane or train? You can fly via Innsbruck or Salzburg, for example. By taxi, rental car or public transport you can get to your accommodation quickly. Mayrhofen, for example, has its own train station.
