Mayrhofen is located in the Zillertal 3000 ski area and is one of the most popular winter sports destinations in Austria. Especially for advanced skiers there is plenty of choice in slopes. Look up the various mountain peaks during the day and enjoy the cosy après-ski in the evening. The ski area near Mayrhofen has a high snow guarantee. On the Hintertux Glacier you can even explore the slopes in the middle of summer. With the Zillertal Superskipass you can also go on an adventure in the other ski areas in the Zillertal. Skiing, snowboarding, winter hiking, tobogganing and cross-country skiing. It's all possible in Zillertal 3000.
Mayrhofen is less than 1000 kilometers from the Netherlands and is easily accessible by car, train and plane.
The ski area Zillertal 3000 is located around the famous Austrian village Mayrhofen. We usually talk about the ski area Mayrhofen. Zillertal 3000 includes the ski areas of Mayrhofen, Finkenberg, Lanersbach (Tux) and the Hintertuxer Glacier. If you include the Hintertuxer Glacier, Zillertal 3000 is the largest ski area in the Zillertal with 196 kilometres of pistes. The glacier is not directly connected to the rest of the skiing area. For this you have to take the ski bus a little bit. The Ahorn subarea near Mayrhofen is not directly connected either.
You can choose between different ski passes in the Mayrhofen ski area (Zillertal 3000). The simplest is the 1-day Zillertal 3000 ski pass. This gives you access to the ski areas of Mayrhofen, Finkenberg and Lanersbach (Tux). Children up to about 5 years of age ski for free. From 2 days you automatically get a Zillertal Superskipas. This pass can be used in all ski areas in the Zillertal. You can also go to the Hintertuxer Glacier. Or go on an adventure day in the Zillertal Arena or the Hochzillertal-Hochfügen ski area.
Most busses and trains between the ski resorts take you free of charge on presentation of the Zillertal Superski Pass. The characteristics of the Zillertal 3000 ski area near Mayrhofen are shown in the following table.

In the ski area Zillertal 3000 you will find several villages. The most famous village is Mayrhofen. The other villages are Finkenberg, Tux and Hippach-Schwendau. Mayrhofen is a cosy village in the centre of the ski area. The Penkenbahn brings you on one side up into the ski area. Mayrhofen is very low at an altitude of 630 meters. There is no downhill run to the village, so you must always return by gondola. During the winter months there is not always snow in the village.
On the other side of Mayrhofen you can also take the Ahornbahn to the top. At the Ahorn you'll find a number of beautiful slopes. However, these are not connected to the rest of the ski area of Mayrhofen. From the Ahorn there is a black valley run back to the village.
Downhill from the Ahorn to Mayrhofen
Mayrhofen is not a traditional village, but really focused on the masses. You will find many hotels, apartment complexes and chalets here. The architecture is also quite atmospheric. The old village centre is still traditional. There are several shops, restaurants and après-ski facilities in Mayrhofen. Tux is the collective name for the villages in the Tuxertal: Vorderlanersbach, Lanersbach, Juns, Madseit and Hintertux. The villages are authentic, quiet and in winter often covered with snow.
From Lanersbach and Vorderlanersbach you can take the ski lift directly into the ski area. There are also valley runs back to these two villages. Hintertux is closest to the Hintertux Glacier. From Hintertux you can take the lift up towards the glacier and there is also a valley run. Finkenberg lies between Tux and Mayrhofen. A modern gondola takes you up to the Zillertal 3000 ski area. There is no downhill run. Finkenberg is smaller, more authentic and a lot quieter than Mayrhofen.
Hippach-Schwendau is located between two ski areas: the Mayrhofen ski area and the ski area Zillertal Arena (Zell am Ziller). Hippach-Schwendau is ideal if you want to explore both skiing areas. On the outskirts of the village of Hippach is the lift to the Zillertal 3000 ski area. Usually you have to take the ski bus or car to this lift. Both Hippach and Schwendau are authentic and quite quiet. There are several restaurants, shops and cafes in the villages.

The ski area around Mayrhofen roughly consists of the Penken, Ahorn, Eggalm, Rastkogel, the Horberg and the Hintertuxer Glacier. In most of the subareas you will find a collection of blue and red pistes. Due to the limited number of valley descents, the slopes are generally quite short. Only at the Ahorn and on the glacier you will find long descents. In the ski area the emphasis is on red and black pistes. Beginners should therefore always look for easy downhill runs. If you want to go to a different sub-region, you will often not be able to avoid a spicy red slope. In short, Mayrhofen (Zillertal 3000) is not an ideal ski area for beginners. The most beautiful blue slopes can be found at the Ahorn and the Rastkogel.
Red and black runs enough around Mayrhofen. For advanced skiers there is a lot to do. At the Penken, for example, you will find the soot-black Harakiri. This is the steepest prepared slope in Austria with a gradient of 78%. The black Devil's Run from the Horberg is also recommended. At the Penken you will also find a large fun park for the freestylers.
There are many off-piste possibilities. You can only look for pristine snow along the slopes or under some lifts. After heavy snowfall, the Horberg valley offers some options for freeriders.
Touring is excellent in the Zillertal 3000 ski area. The slopes and lifts of the subareas are well connected to each other. Flat stretches are hardly encountered. From Mayrhofen you can for example via various lifts and slopes all the way to Lanersbach skiing or boarding. From there it is only a short distance by bus to the glacier. A visit to the Hintertux Glacier is highly recommended. The snow here is excellent. The descents are pretty long and nice and spicy.
Paragliding in Mayrhofen is a real experience
The ski area near Mayrhofen is not ideal for winter sports with small children. The ski area has a lot of red and black slopes and is especially aimed at advanced skiers. In addition, you have to take the lift up and down from most villages every day. Once up there are scattered through the ski area enough kindererlanden and practice meadows to find. On the Ahorn and Penken above Mayrhofen you will find fine Kinderlanden. Especially the children's land on the Penken is very large. Because of the sheltered location and limited height (1800 meters) it is fine to stay here for the little ones.
In Wuppy's Kinderland in Mayrhofen there is day care for the little ones from 3 months to 5 years. Older children can't go on adventures alone in the ski area, except on the Ahorn. The rest of the ski area is too big and many slopes are too steep.
Most villages in the Mayrhofen ski area (Zillertal 3000) are situated quite low. Only in the villages in the Tuxertal there is snow during almost the whole winter. The pistes are fortunately a lot higher and are therefore quite snow sure. The location is favorable and the area regularly faces heavy snowfall. Where necessary, snow cannons are used. On the glacier the snow is at its greatest. In fact, you can ski or snowboard here all year round. January and February are the snowiest months. You can visit the area from mid-December to mid-December. In snowfree years also until the end of April.
Summer skiing on the Hintertux Glacier
Mayrhofen is known for its cosy après-ski. If you want you can party till late in the morning. The audience is generally quite young. The most popular après-ski tents in Mayrhofen are Brück'n Stadl and the ICE bar right at the bottom of the Penkenbahn. In several discotheques the nightlife continues until the sun rises.
In Finkenberg the après-ski is a lot less vibrant than in Mayrhofen. There are a number of places where you can have a drink and dance. You will also find a few discotheques in the village. In Hippach and Schwendau is not so much to experience après-ski. The Yeti Bar at the valley station of the Horbergbahn is very festive and cozy. And the Pink Panther is a popular place after skiing.
At almost every valley station in Tux you will find après-ski tents. It can be quite buzzing here. At the bottom of the Hintertux Glacier is the Hohenhaus Tenne for example cozy. Just like the Hexenkessl in Vorderlanersbach.
Are you going on winter sports for the first time? Then it is wise to arrange ski lessons or snowboard lessons. Lessons are also a good choice if you already have some experience and want to learn the technique even better. There are several ski schools in Mayrhofen and the other villages in the Zillertal 3000 ski area.
You can opt for group lessons or private lessons. Booking can be done on the spot, but often in advance from the Netherlands. The rates for group lessons are between € 150 and € 200 for 4 days x 4 hours. Private lessons are often more effective, but a lot more expensive. Think of € 250 for 4 lessons. Prices for children and adults are similar.
Lunch on the slopes in Austria is excellent in various restaurants. And this is certainly also the case in the Mayrhofen ski area. On top of the mountain you will find both traditional mountain huts and more modern restaurants. Pizza, a hamburger with fries, soup with bread, a large salad, Tyrolean gröstl or a large schnitzel. It's all possible. For a lunch you'll spend between 5 and 25 euros on average.
The Scheekarr Hutte is a popular and popular organic restaurant on the slopes above Mayrhofen. You can also spend the night here. Not cheap, but a beautiful location. You get directly on the slopes from your hotel! On the Ahorn you will find a special igloo village: White Lounge. Here you can eat and drink very well. Both inside the igloo and outside in a lounger in the sun. There are even more excellent restaurants on the slopes near Mayrhofen. Prices are average for Austrian terms.
The ski resort Mayrhofen (Zillertal 3000) is very popular. Nevertheless, the prices are fine by Austrian standards. There are affordable accommodations in all villages. Also the prices for the ski pass and the food and drinks in the entire ski area are normal. There are all kinds of good accommodations to choose from. In the Mayrhofen ski area you can stay in a hotel, guesthouse, chalet or apartment. Also on top of the mountains you will find several accommodations. Step straight from your apartment, chalet or hotel onto the slopes of the Mayrhofen ski area.
A well-known hotel right at the bottom of the lift near Mayrhofen is for example Hotel Strass. The hotel has cheap simple rooms as well as luxury hotel rooms. At the bottom of the hotel you will find on one side the ICE bar and on the other side an extensive wellness area for hotel guests. The Brugger Dörfl chalets in the middle of Mayrhofen are recommended for groups.
The Zillertal 3000 ski area can be very busy, especially during holidays. Due to the lack of a downhill run, it is usually busy at the end of the day at the gondola down. Also in the morning there is often a queue at the gondola. By the way, the gondola is modern, big and fast. The queues dissolve quite quickly. At the top of the gondola is a large restaurant with outdoor terrace. So you can have a drink if the queues are too long.
The Zillertal 3000 ski area is fairly easy to reach. Especially up to Hippach-Schwendau and Mayrhofen the journey usually goes smoothly. It can only be very busy when there is heavy snowfall and on changeover days. Tip: Make sure you arrive early. On the way from Mayrhofen to Finkenberg, it is a tough climb. The valley is quite narrow and because of the hustle and bustle it can clog up very well. Because of this you are often on the way to Finkenberg and the villages in the Tuxertal. Also here is arriving early the advice.
By train or plane to Zillertal 3000 is also a possibility. The airfield in Innsbruck is an hour's drive from Mayrhofen. Take the train to Innsbruck and change to the train in the direction of Mayrhofen. In Hippach-Schwendau you will also find a train station.
Zillertal 3000 is a beautiful ski area at the very end of the Zillertal. With the cosy village of Mayrhofen and the snow-assured Hintertuxer Glacier, it is a popular winter sports destination.
