The ski area Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn is a large and complete ski area in Austria. There is plenty to do in the snow for children, beginners and advanced skiers alike. Skiing and snowboarding of course, but also cross-country skiing, tobogganing and winter hiking. The Saalbach Hinterglemm ski area is one of the largest and most popular ski areas in Austria. Two different ski passes are possible in the ski area. Of course there is the ski pass for the ski area Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn with 270 kilometres of pistes. In addition, you can also opt for a SuperSkipas.

The SuperSkipas gives access to no less than 2396 kilometres of pistes. Absolutely recommended if you are going to ski for more than a week. This pass covers 23 ski areas in Austria. 2. Saalbach, Hinterglemm and the other villages in the ski area

Rave on Snow with many international DJ's for example and international ski races. In addition, there are many shops, restaurants and pubs in Saalbach and Hinterglemm.

Saalbach is a cosy traditional village with a car-free main street. Here you will find three gondolas with which you can reach three different mountain peaks. There are also several beautiful valley descents towards the village. Furthermore, Saalbach is known for its cozy après-ski. Also Hinterglemm is traditional and has a car-free center. There are no less than four gondolas that take you to the ski area. Different parts of the village can be reached via downhill runs. Hinterglemm is also one of the best après-ski destinations in Austria.

The other villages in the ski area are Leogang, Fieberbrunn, Maishofen and Viehhofen. Here it is a lot quieter. Each village has its own characteristics. In Viehhofen, for example, there is a Landal holiday park. In Fieberbrunn you can relax in the Aubad with slides and saunas. Leogang has a floodlit run for night skiing. And in Maishofen you'll find peace and quiet and a magnificent castle.

3. Winter sports in the ski circus Saalbach Hinterglemm

The Skicircus is large and stretches over several mountain peaks. The highest peaks are just above 2000 meters. The villages of Saalbach and Hinterglemm are very centrally located in the ski area. The ski area is ideal for beginners. Many wide blue slopes and a number of easy red runs. With a little experience you can already make various trips. Tip: Try the blue slope 46 from the Bernkogel to Saalbach. Think of snowy paths between the trees where you can glide through.

For advanced users there is also plenty to do. The most beautiful slopes can be found around the Schattberg and the Zwölferkogel. The area has many possibilities for tours. There are many lift connections and connection slopes. Can you in a day from Leogang to the Zwölferkogel and back again? The area is quite low and there are no very high peaks. Many steep black slopes you will not find in the area. However, the 4 km long black slope 1 from the Schattberg is a real challenge. Or you can enjoy the black race descent 15 from the Zwölferkogel.

The slopes fit nicely and you barely have any flat parts. With the exception of Maishofen, each village has a valley slope. No long queues at the lifts to get back to your accommodation at the end of the skiing day. There are also several off-piste routes possible. Especially around Fieberbrunn. In addition to skiing and snowboarding in the winter there are more activities possible. Cross-country skiing, for example, is very well possible in the vicinity of Hinterglemm. Just like winter hiking and touring skiing. Both in Leogang and Hinterglemm you will find a floodlit piste where you can descend in the evening and even at night. You can also toboggan in the ski circus.

4. Saalbach Hinterglemm: very child friendly

The Saalbach Hinterglemm ski area is ideal for children. In Saalbach and Hinterglemm you will find very good children's slopes, simple practice slopes, blue slopes and other facilities for the little ones. The area is a great destination for children to learn skiing or snowboarding. Leogang also has a nice children's land and a number of easy slopes. It is a bit quieter here than in Saalbach and Hinterglemm. Fieberbrunn is also very child-friendly with its own children's land, practice slopes and ski school.

Viehhofen is a lovely quiet village in the ski area. The Landal park is very child friendly. However, around the village you will find no practice slopes or children's lands. There is a downhill run to Viehhofen with a small drag lift at the bottom. Handy if you want to ride a sled. There are serious plans to make direct lift connections from Viehhofen to the ski area of Saalbach Hinterglemm and to the ski area of Zell am See. This will make the village a connecting area between two large skiing areas. To get to the Saalbach Hinterglemm ski area, you will need to take the ski bus or car for the time being.

The different parts of the ski area are well connected to each other. There are also few very steep parts to be found. Older children with some experience can go on an adventure on their own.

5. Saalbach Hinterglemm: moderate snow conditions

The ski area of Saalbach Hinterglemm is not very high. Moreover, the area has quite a few slopes to the south. Lots of sunshine, which is of course great while skiing. However, the snow layer is often on the thin side. Snow cannons are used to guarantee white slopes. The villages are only at low temperatures and heavy snowfall wit. January and February are the snowiest months. You can then almost always enjoy skiing and snowboarding in the area. Generally speaking, December and March are also good months. In April it soon gets too hot and the snow quality leaves much to be desired.

6. Après-ski in Saalbach, Hinterglemm and the other villages nearby

Winter sports in Saalbach Hinterglemm stands for cosy après-ski. In many mountain huts, lunch easily turns into après-ski. And the villages of Saalbach and Hinterglemm are also perfect for partying. If you like, you can party until late into the night. The winter sports crowd during the après-ski in Saalbach and Hinterglemm is very diverse, so almost everyone feels at home here. It is usually a Dutch party. Nice après-ski tents are for example the Goaßstall in Hinterglemm and the Hinterhag Alm in Saalbach.

Leogang has no exuberant après-ski. Especially in the evening it is very quiet. But you can have a drink here in the afternoon after skiing. In Maishofen and Viehhofen is little to do in terms of après-ski. For that you really have to go to Saalbach or Hinterglemm. Fieberbrunn is also a cosy après-ski village. There are several tents where you can party on his Austrian or Dutch. Things are a bit quieter here than in Saalbach or Hinterglemm.

7. Saalbach Hinterglemm: ski schools

In Austria you can learn skiing or snowboarding. A must for beginners and anyone who wants to learn the technique better. In the Saalbach Hinterglemm ski area you will find various ski schools for both children and adults. You can choose between group lessons or private lessons. It is often possible to book lessons from the Netherlands for your holiday. Then you know for sure that you have a place.

For a group lesson you pay between 160 and 220 euro for 4 days of lessons. This at a time expenditure of 4 hours per day. For a private lesson of 4 hours you pay around 250 euro. A lot more expensive than group lessons, but you often learn it faster. The prices vary per ski school and often you can also choose an advantage package including ski rental.

8. Enjoy traditional and modern dishes during winter sports.

You consume a lot of energy while skiing or boarding. And of course your energy level needs to be replenished. That's why you can enjoy delicious food in the various traditional mountain huts and modern restaurants. From a simple salad with bread to a large plate with French fries with Frankfurters. The prices for a lunch on the slopes vary from about 5 to 20 euros.

Enjoy a hearty meal with a cold beer in the cosiness of Bauer's Schi-Alm in Saalbach. Or sit in the sunshine on the terrace of the luxury Schwarzacher in Hinterglemm. In this and many other mountain huts, lunch flows seamlessly into the après-ski.

9. Saalbach Hinterglemm: accommodations, price level and hustle and bustle

In the Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm-Leogang-Fieberbrunn you will find numerous hotels, chalets, apartments and guesthouses. Whatever your budget, this is the place to be. The prices are generally very reasonable. Only the ski pass is a bit expensive. For that you get a large ski area with modern lifts in return. Saalbach and Hinterglemm are the most expensive villages in the ski area. In Hinterglemm, for example, you will find a luxury five-star hotel: the Alpine Palace - New Balance Resort. There are also several four-star hotels located in both villages.

If you don't have much to spend, there are plenty of cheap apartments and guesthouses to choose from in Saalbach and Hinterglemm. In general, the further away from the centre and the ski lifts, the lower the price. In order to save costs you can also go to one of the small hamlets in the area, such as Kolling, Lengau or Vorderglemm. Kolling and Vorderglemm are close to a gondola. From Lengau you have to take the skibus.

Fieberbrunn, Leogang, Maishofen and Viehhofen are a lot cheaper than Saalbach and Hinterglemm. You will find all kinds of accommodation here. From star hotels to cheap guesthouses. In addition, the four villages are a bit more on the edges of the ski area. Maishofen is even outside the valley and has no lift connection. The first gondola can be reached after 15 minutes by skibus.

10: Saalbach Hinterglemm: accessibility

To reach the ski area you cross the border at Kufstein. Then you drive over B-roads to Saalfelden. You can also choose to drive via Inzell for some more motorway. Fieberbrunn and Leogang are situated along the main road from Sankt Johann to Saalfelden. From Saalfelden you drive into the valley to the other villages. Maishofen you meet first. Then soon follows Viehhofen. Saalbach is located approximately in the middle of the valley. Then it's an easy climb to Hinterglemm at the end of the valley. The road is well passable. Only on changeover days it can be very busy.

During the winter period it can snow heavily in Austria. Snow chains and winter tyres are therefore recommended. Winter tyres are even compulsory in Austria and Germany in winter conditions. Don't forget a vignette for the motorway. You can also take a plane to the Saalbach Hinterglemm ski area. It is a short drive to the nearest airport of Salzburg. Count on a one way trip from the airport to your accommodation of about 2 hours. You can also take the train from the Netherlands. Leogang, Maishofen and Fieberbrunn have a train station.

  • Book on time: Don't wait too long with books. The Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm is popular and accommodations fill up quickly. Especially during holiday periods.
  • Travel insurance: Get good travel insurance. Winter sports is not without risks. If you're on the slopes you'd rather not worry about the cost of a banana or helicopter.
