Den Helder, only 6 km away, is known for its naval base and the Naval Museum is certainly interesting to visit. While you're there, take a look at the Fort Kijkduin. The old fort now houses a museum and sea aquarium. The boat to Texel also departs from Den Helder. Climb the lighthouse, eat kibbles in one of the beach bars, cycle through the dune landscape or visit the seal sanctuary Ecomare. For those who want to taste and buy Dutch cheese, be sure to visit Alkmaar.
